Breaking Boredom

A lot of people ask me if I get bored doing the same thing over and over, because let’s face it: there are only so many ways to train your biceps. But really, fitness is like a living thing, growing and changing every day. I love that there are constantly new ideas and concepts popping up – CrossFit, HIIT class, Cardio Barre and endless varieties of yoga. I try them all and do my best to flip tires, sprint stairs, plié and relieve and headstand with the rest of the class.

The great thing about the variety available is that you can always find something to keep your workouts fresh. It’s important to find balance in your program to avoid boredom and keep progressing toward your goals. This month I put together a few tips that can help you find balance in your own workouts and gain some motivation to continue forward.

  1. Leave your comfort zone. Like like they say, if you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve already got, and a lot of people live in this space because it’s easy and cofortable. But if you’re trying to change your physique this hidey-hole is counterintuitive. Let go of your fears and step into the ‘new’ – try a new gym, run a 5K, or go for your black belt in karate. It’s never too late to start something new!
  2. Rotate your gadgets. We’ve all given in to impulse and bought a workout gadget in a store or off an infomercial, and typically we’ll use it for a month and get bored – totally normal. But you can put these dusty old things to good use – drag them out from under your bed and blend them into a circuit with a few jumping jacks, burpees, and body weight moves for a great little home workout on days you don’t make it to the gym.
  3. Reward yourself. Like Pavlov’s dogs, people respond positively to rewards, so if you can give yourself a treat when you achieve a goal you’ll be more likely to continue with your program. A jump rope, new mat, or even a nice pair of new socks can be enough to keep you inspired.
  4. Learn to laugh at yourself. I’m a fitness expert and as such I like to think of myself as being very fit. But without fail, when I jump into something new or different I struggle and look foolish. In my younger days I would feel defeated and embarrassed when I couldn’t keep up, but now I understand that everyone is challenged by something new, and that it’s important to let go of perfection in order to learn and grow. Everyone is a beginner from time to time, so go with the flow and laugh along the way.
  5. Continue with the classics. There will always be a trendy workout, and some will last but most will fade away. But take a look at the ones that stick and you’ll notice a similarity: they all incorporate classic multi-joint exercises such as squats, lunges, pushups, burpees, and planks. Those five moves alone offer a full-body workout and when done in a circuit to challenge your cardiovascular system as well. They have stood the test of time and will always find their way into the trends that stick simply because they work.
